In the discussion about radical Islamic terrorism, it is often observed that the ideology underlying terrorism must be addressed and defeated. Yet, rarely, if at all, does the discussion extend to an approach or strategy for combating this heinous ideology that supports mass murder of innocent people to achieve a political aim. Perhaps this is attributable to the lack of a credible theoretical or philosophical basis, upon which an effective argument to refute this murderous ideology might be made. Ironically, herein lies the basis for refuting the ideology.
Terrorism involves murder and mayhem; on a mass scale. Murder, in and on its face, is wrong for one reason, to wit: God has declared it so; stating in Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder.”
The deliberate taking of innocent life is sin; and a monstrous sin; one that God defined as a capital offense; that is, one punishable by death. Hence, the basis for refuting and vitiating the terrorist ideology is reflected in the Bible, that is, the word of God.
Terrorist ideology reflects and promotes the notion that one who commits terrorist atrocities is serving God; will go to heaven; and that men engaging in such murderous acts will acquire women for sensual purposes. This notion, in whole and part, is patently false. It is a blatant and egregious lie; one that completely misrepresents, and mischaracterizes the God of Scripture.
The Scripture conveys, “For the Lord loves justice;” (Psa 37:28) and that “righteousness and justice are the foundation of His throne.” (Psa 89:14) Moreover, it declares, “Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer; and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.” (1 Jn 3:15) The word of God could not be more explicit; no unrepentant murderer is destined to heaven; but rather, condemned; ultimately destined for punishment in hell. In effect, the wrath of God abides on him.
The fundamental problem is that radical Islamic terrorists are deceived, and devoid of spiritual truth; which is the only truth, as revealed in Scripture. They are blind to spiritual realities; and thus, “There is no fear of God before their eyes.” (Rom 3:18) They do not understand the Creator; the God of Scripture; who is the only God. They do not fear God, because they do not know Him; and they erroneously believe they are serving Him by murdering innocent men, women, and children. This does not excuse their abominable behavior; and the damnable consequences they will reap; it simply explains it.
Terrorist ideology is essentially a moral issue; and the geneses of morality is God. Accordingly, terrorist ideology can only be refuted, and ultimately expunged, by declaring God’s truth, as revealed in Scripture. There is no other foundational basis for a credible argument against this heinous ideology.
Terrorism must not only be fought with force of arms; and robust law enforcement operations; but with the power of Biblical truth; and the central message that must be delivered to those who would murder the innocent is reflected in these verses:
“You hate all who do iniquity.” (Psa 5:5)
“A jealous and avenging God is the Lord; The Lord is avenging and wrathful. The Lord takes vengeance on His adversaries, and He reserves wrath for His enemies.” (Nah 1:2)
“And inasmuch as it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment,” (Heb 9:27 )
“But for the cowardly and unbelieving and abominable and murderers and immoral persons and sorcerers and idolaters and all liars, their part will be in the lake that burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Rev 21:8)
A full exposition of the nature of the message which must be delivered to refute the terrorist ideology is reflected in Jonathan Edwards’ July 8th 1741 sermon, entitled, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God.” In short, the message from Scripture to declare to those who murder the innocent is, “They will pay the penalty of eternal destruction; and forever face the fury of a fire with brimstone that is never quenched.”
God abhors murder; and it is time to declare and reinforce the truth; that He will execute eternal vengeance on His adversaries. In this respect, this nation’s pastors must unleash God’s truth, in the form of the inescapable wrath and judgment of God for the detestable sin of murder; and the US State Department, US Department of Defense, and other relevant agencies should use their vast communications resources to deliver this message, as part of the war strategy, to the terrorist enemy.
The sooner the US Government realizes the only way to wage war against terrorist ideology is with Biblical truth; the sooner this diabolical ideology will abate; and the sooner this barbaric enemy will be erradicated from the earth.
